When the human body overreacts to a trigger called an allergen, an allergic reaction is the result. As many as 1 in 4 people are allergic to something and children are particularly affected. The most common allergens are food, plants, medicines, insects, moulds, animal dander, and chemicals. Allergic reactions range from mild to severe. Symptoms may include everything from sneezing and runny nose to wheezing, rash, and vomiting. The most severe kind of allergic reaction is anaphylaxis which can be fatal and is characterised by trouble breathing, a swollen tongue, and tightness in the chest, among other symptoms.
The immune system's reaction to an allergen is to create immunoglobulin E or IgE antibodies. These antibodies trigger a chain of reactions throughout the body, including the release of mast cell chemicals. An example of a mast cell chemical is histamine, something that can cause itching and redness. This is why seasonal allergies like hay fever are treated with anti-histamines.
It is essential that allergies are treated with respect and care to ensure that the best possible outcome results.
